Buying an ounce: when 28 g makes sense and what shake is for
The cheapest gram on the menu is almost always inside an ounce. It is also the easiest way to waste money if the jar goes stale in a drawer. Here is how to decide.
The sizes
Flower comes as 3.5 g (an eighth), 7 g (a quarter), 14 g (a half) and 28 g (an ounce). Price per gram drops at each step. On our menu the same strain can cost roughly a third less per gram as an ounce than as an eighth.
When an ounce makes sense
- You smoke the same strain most days and finish an eighth in under a week.
- You roll for a group regularly.
- You have found a strain you like and it is in stock in a 28 g jar. Silver Candy, Backpackboyz Lemon Cherry Gelato and the Dab Daddy line all come as full ounces.
When it does not
- You like variety. Two quarters of different strains beat one ounce of one.
- You use a little at a time. A month-old open ounce is not the ounce you paid for.
Keeping it fresh
Air, light and heat are the enemies. Keep the jar closed, out of the sun, at room temperature, not in the fridge. A humidity pack in the jar buys you weeks. If you buy an ounce, consider splitting it into two smaller jars so one stays sealed.
What shake is
Shake is the small pieces and loose material that collect at the bottom of a batch. It is the same flower, just not whole buds, and it costs a fraction of the price. We carry shake by the ounce in Blue Dream, Gorilla Glue #4, Tahoe OG, Banana Kush and Jack Herer. It is the right buy for people who roll a lot and do not care about bag appeal, and the wrong buy for anyone who wants to show off a jar.
Infused ounces
KAWS and Dab Daddy sell 28 g jars of infused flower: buds coated in concentrate and, for KAWS, named after cereals like Fruity Pebbles, Cocoa Puffs and Froot Loops. These are far stronger than plain flower and priced accordingly. Treat them like an infused pre-roll: use less.
